Our Story

Meet Carmella

Mella Fine Jewels began at a kitchen table in Melbourne — a sketchbook, a jar of pencils, and two little girls asking what Mum was drawing.

Carmella — Mella to the people who love her — designs fine jewellery the way she believes it should be done: personally. Every commission begins as a conversation and becomes a piece drawn just for you, shaped by the feminine, floral and Art Deco lines she is known for.

Because Mella is a design studio rather than a showroom, there are no flagship rents or big-brand mark-ups built into your piece. What you invest goes where it belongs — into the stones, the metal and the making.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

A lab-grown diamond is physically, chemically and optically identical to a mined diamond — real diamond, grown above the ground, and graded to exactly the same standards by independent laboratories.

It simply costs a fraction as much. Which means your budget stretches to the size, the colour grade and the design you actually want.

Every lab-grown diamond is described as exactly that, and comes with its certificate.

Natural Gemstones

Australian sapphires in every colour of dusk, emeralds, rubies, spinels, tourmalines and pearls — chosen stone by stone for colour and character.

Coloured gemstones are the heart of Mella's floral work: petals of pink sapphire, leaves of tsavorite, a blossom built around your birthstone.

Heirloom Redesign

Nanna's ring, reimagined

Some jewellery is too precious to wear and too precious to leave in a drawer. Redesigning family pieces is Mella's speciality — resetting inherited diamonds and gemstones into modern designs made for your life, while honouring the story they carry.

Your stones are treated like family the whole way through, and where possible the original gold is reused in the new piece or credited against the making.

You'll also receive photographs of the original piece with your finished redesign — so its first chapter is never lost.

An obligation-free consultation — by video anywhere in Australia, or in person in Melbourne. Bring ideas, Pinterest boards, or nothing at all.

The Design

Sketches and a 3D render of your piece, refined with you until it's exactly right. Nothing is made without your yes.

The Making

Your piece is crafted to order in precious metal, with certified stones set with care — and progress shared along the way.

The Reveal

Presented in the Mella box with its certificate and care guide. Insurance valuation documents can be arranged.

How much does a custom piece cost?+
Every commission is quoted individually, because every piece is different. Tell us your budget honestly in the consultation and Carmella will design to it — not past it. Because Mella is an independent studio without showroom overheads, your budget usually goes further than you'd expect.
How long does a commission take?+
Most pieces take four to eight weeks from the moment you approve the final design. Working towards a proposal date or an anniversary? Tell us early — faster timelines are sometimes possible.
What's the difference between lab-grown and mined diamonds?+
A lab-grown diamond is real diamond — physically, chemically and optically identical to a mined stone, and graded to the same standards. The difference is where it was formed, and the price: lab-grown diamonds typically cost a fraction as much, so budgets stretch to bigger or finer stones. Every stone we set is described exactly as what it is, with an independent certificate (IGI or GIA) supplied.
Can you use stones and gold from my old jewellery?+
Almost always, yes — resetting inherited stones is our speciality. Diamonds and most gemstones can be lifted and reset into a new design. Original gold is assessed piece by piece: where it can be reused, it is; where it can't, its value can often be credited against your new piece.
Where are you based — and do we need to meet in person?+
The studio is in Melbourne, and in-person consultations are available by appointment. Most of the journey works beautifully over video too — clients commission from every corner of Australia, with pieces delivered by insured courier.
What if I don't know what I want yet?+
Then you're exactly who the first conversation is for. Bring a feeling, a person, a story or a Pinterest board — Carmella will translate it into sketches, and you'll know it the moment you see it.
